Panerai Models

Panerai Luminor

Panerai Luminor

Panearai created the Luminor at the end of the 1940s, the first Luminor, a reliable watch, resistant and easily readable under any conditions: adapted to the extreme military use for which it was intended.

The distinctive characteristics that make it a unique watch with an original personality are:

  • Large size dial, simple and easily legible even in the dark or under water
  • Lever device protecting the winding crown (protected by Trademark), which guards the winding crown from shocks and accidental movements, preventing the hands being inadvertently shifted and contributing to the water tightness of the crown, ensuring its resistance to water even at great depths
  • Highly remarkable movements, transformed by Panerai according to the criteria of traditional Swiss watchmaking

The OP X and OP XI movements, used by Panerai in its Historic range, are equipped with a swan's neck regulator which enables the rate of the watch to be adjusted very precisely.

Panerai Luminor Base Left-Handed

Panerai Luminor Base Left Handed

In the early 1940s, the characteristic Panerai device with a lever locking the crown was fitted to the left-hand side of the case, meeting the needs of the Naval frogmen who wanted to wear the watch on the right wrist, since they already wore a compass or a depth guide on the left.

Recalling this technical-functional ingenuity, Panerai has researched and perfected a special watch for left-handers and other who prefer to wear their watch on the right wrist: the Panerai Luminor Base Left-Handed.

The distinctive features compared with the Luminor Base, resulting from the specifically designed movement, are the winding crown and the device protecting the crown on the left side of the case.

Panerai Luminor Chrono

Panerai Luminor Chrono

The Panerai Luminor Chrono, entirely made in AISI 316L solid steel or titanium, is a high precision sports chronograph fitted with a movement with chronograph functions on two or three counters, the Panerai OP XII calibre. The Luminor Chrono is available in the 44 mm and 40 mm version.

The inscription "Daylight", displayed on the dial of the 44 mm model at 12 o'clock brings back into the limelight a name reserved by Officine Panerai for a "very special" client.

Daylight is the title of the successful film starring Sylvester Stallone made a few years ago. Several series of Panerai watches bearing this name have been produced at the special request of the American actor.

In 2009 the Chrono Daylight collection is enriched by two new models in titanium with blue dial, with alligator strap or the exclusive titanium bracelet.

The 40 mm model is available with black dial and an alligator strap.

All Panerai Luminor Chrono watches use a special device for changing the strap. A tool, supplied in the box, enables this operation to be carried out with simplicity and precision.

Panerai Luminor GMT

Panerai Luminor GMT

This model takes its inspiration from the world of the sea. The zero or Greenwich meridian is of primary importance for navigators: The time at Greenwich is the reference for the calculations that enable longitude to be determined and therefore the position of a ship to be established.

Very practical today, the GMT function of the Luminor Panerai enables the local time and the time elsewhere to be read simultaneously, signalled on the dial by an appropriate indicator.

The automatic movement, calibre Panerai OP VIII makes this watch even more exclusive and unique, not only from the technical point of view but also at the aesthetic level, preserving the small seconds dial at 9 o'clock like the original.

The model is available with a 44 mm case with alligator strap or metal bracelet or 40 mm case with alligator strap. The collection is enriched by the metal bracelet of exclusive design perfectly integrated with the case.

All Panerai Luminor GMT watches use a special device for changing the strap. A tool, supplied in the box, enables this operation to be carried out with simplicity and precision.

Panerai Luminor Marina

Panerai Luminor Marina

In order to reduce the frequency of the winding operation, in about 1943 Panerai adopted an 8-day Angelus movement for the Luminor, with the small seconds dial at the 9 o'clock position, which still today is the distinctive feature of Panerai watches

Like the other watches in the Historc range, the Luminor Marina is fitted with an haute horlogerie movement transformed by Panerai according to the standards of traditional Swiss watchmaking and the quality criteria of the brand.

Panerai Luminor Marina Automatic

Panerai Luminor Marina Automatic

The Luminor Marina Automatic range consists of watches with cases 44 mm or 40 mm in diameter, fitted with a Swiss automatic mechanical movement: the Panerai Calibre OP III. The Luminor Marina Automatic 44 mm is available with a case in polished steel, brushed steel or brushed titanium with an alligator strap or with a case in brushed titanium or steel with metal bracelet. The 40 mm version has a brushed steel or titanium case and is available with an alligator strap or with a metal bracelet.

The strap is made from selected alligator skins and is available in various colours, as well as brown and black.

The new exclusive metal bracelet in steel or titanium, appears to be a perfect extension of the case. It has a special "suppleness" achieved by the particular way in which the links are shaped.

Also the polished and brushed steel bracelet of the 40 mm version in brushed steel or titanium is designed to achieve a superb level of finish. Each link consists of two superimposed pieces fixed to each other by titanium screws. The security of the fastening system is ensured by a personalised buckle that is operated by two buttons at the side.

All Panerai Luminor Automatic watches use a special device for changing the strap. A tool, supplied in the box, enables this operation to be carried out with simplicity and precision.

Panerai Luminor Power Reserve

Panerai Luminor Power Reserve

The power reserve is a complication much appreciated by connoisseurs and enthusiasts of haute horlogerie.

It enables the amount of time remaining before it is necessary to wind the movement, by reading the approprate indicator on the dial. This function has been perfected by the skill of Swiss master watchmakers who have created a transmission device in which the winding of the spring barrel and the rotation of the movement are linked by an indicator showing the power reserve.

The display changes little by little as the spring transmits the stored energy to the train of the movement.

In the Panerai Luminor Power Reserve, this complex horological function is controlled by an exclusive automatic mechanical movement: the Panerai calibre OP IX.

Study for the position of the power reserve indicator, older more sought after models contain the power reserve indicator above the 6 o'clock marker. Newer models contain the power reserve just of the 6 o'clock marker.

All Panerai Luminor Power Reserve watches use a special device for changing the strap. A tool, supplied in the box, enables this operation to be carried out with simplicity and precision.

Panerai Luminor Submersible

Panerai Luminor Submersible

This watch is the development in the modern style of a model designed for the Egyptian Navy in 1956, which was fitted with an 8-day Angelus movement, a small seconds dial at 9 o'clock, a very large case, and a rotating bezel with reference markers enabling the duration of a dive to be quickly read

The new model inherits the historic model's striking personality, demonstrated by the watch's characteristic bezel, as well as by its readability under extreme conditions of use. the movement of the bezel if of radical design, using a metal ring-shaped element which significantly improves the precision of the click, as well as ensuring that the bezel has the greatest possible resistance to wear and to high temperatures. Patenet filed for this new system.

The adoption of an automatic mechanical movement gives it even greater functionality than its forebear, a testimony to the continuous technical development carried out by Panerai with its constant dedication to achieving the highest standards of quality and readability.

All Panerai Luminor Submerisble watches use a special device for changing the strap. A tool, supplied in the box, enables this operation to be carried out with simplicity and precision.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Flyback

Panerai Luminor 1950 Flyback

In the stron association between Panerai and the chronograph, the Luminor 1950 Chrono Rattrapante and Flyback represent an important evolutionary movement, insofar as they introduce a newly conceived aesthetic with technical details of absolute value.

The case of these two watches continues the range known as the Luminor 1950, with the rounded edges and the smoothly rounded bezel with polished finish, which confers a touch of classicism on an object with a markedly sporting tendency. The sapphire crystal too is unusual, with accentuated cambering of the edges, achieved by working the synthetic sapphire internally.

The Panerai Luminor Chrono Rattrapante is a split-seconds chronograph equipped with the Panerai OP XVIII calibre, an exclusive automatic movement distinguished by the system of operating the chronograph functions through twin column wheels.

The movement equipping the Panerai Luminor 1950 Chrono Flyback in the Panerai OP XIX automatic movement. Apart from the typical indications of the simple chronograph, this calibre has a further function: "flyback" or "retour en vol". If the resisting push-piece is pressed while the chronograph is running, the chornograph hands and returned directly to zero, without having first to be stopped. By releasing the resetting push piece the chronograph hand immediately begins a new measurement starting from zero.

The Panerai Luminor 1950 Rattrapante and Flyback watches use a special device for changing the strap. A tool, supplied in the box, enables this operation to be carried out with simplicity and precision.

Panerai Radiomir

Panerai Radiomir Black Seal Ceramic

The Panerai Radiomir (steel or pink gold case) and Radiomir BLACK SEAL (steel or ceramic case) reproduce the design of the first, historic watch created by Officine Panerai in 1938 for the Royal Italian Navy.

This watch was distinguished by the structure of its case which ensured a particularly high degree of water-resistance through its screw-down winding crown and screw back, while the use of the Radiomir, a luminous paint based on zinc sulphide, mesothorium and radium bromide, gave the dial maximum visibility even in the most unfavourable conditions.

The Radiomir Historic collection is enriched by the Radiomir watch in black ceramic. The choice of using thid high-tech material, particularly interesting both from an aesthetical and a technical point of view, represents the development of the concept of technical experimentation which is constantly pusued by Panerai. The ceramic used is zirconium oxide and it is moulded from powder using a process of isostatic pressure. In this way all the special features of this material are enhanced: its extreme hardness (up to five times greater than steel), its strong resistance to a wide range of tempratures, and the fact when worn for long periods the watch does not become scratched, damaged or corroded.

Panerai Watches - The Panerai Presentation Case

Panerai watches are supplied with an exclusive craftsman-made presentation case executed in pear wood.

Panerai Watches - History

  • 1860 - Giovanni Panerai (1825-97) founded the family business and opens the first watchmaker's shop in Florence on the Ponte alle Grazie and he soon establishes contacts with the most prestigious makes of Swiss watches. Giovanni is succeeded by his son, Leon Francesco.
  • 1864-70 - During this period Guido Panerai & Figlio is founded in Florence. The company designs its high precision mechanical engineering side and becomes an official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy. Later on the small florentine company becomes Officine Panerai.
  • 1890 - In the early years of the 20th century the shop Orologeria Svizzera becomes an established enterprise, not simply as a watch retailer but also as a substantial supplier of spare parts, accessories and tools for precision engineering, with an associated workshop for repairing clocks and watches. It is the first watchmaking school in Florence.
  • 1910 - The first experiments with luminous materials begin and a system is developed to make instrument dials and sighting and telescopic devices luminous. The luminescence is achieved using a mix of zinc sulphide and radium bromide given later the name Radiomir. Inserted into tiny glass tubes to increase its resistance over time, this mix was the subject of patent applications by Guido Panerai in Italy and other countries.
  • 1913 - The company creates precision instruments for the Royal Italian Navy during the First World War including luminous devices for firing naval guns at night, timing mechanisms, depth gauges and mechanic calculators to launch torpedoes from MAS, high speed motor torpedo boats. A distinctive feature of these instruments was their powerful self-luminosity which enabled them to be used even in complete darkness. Their intensity was due to the use of a special substance, Radiomir, patented by Guido Panerai in 1915 (application).
  • 1934 - Guido Panerai's children, Giuseppe and Maria, continue developing their father's business. Maria is mainly concerned with running the Orologeria Svizzera shop, while Giuseppe devotes himself almost entirely to the company's business of supplying underwater instruments, torches, wrist compasses and wrist depth gauges to the Royal Italian Navy. He can take credit for the creation of the famous Radiomir and Luminor watches.
  • 1935 - Officine Panerai extends his collaboration with the Italian Navy, supplying precision pocket stopwatches specifically designed for military use.
  • 1936 - Following disappointing tests carried out on the watches available at that time, the Royal Italian Navy asks Panerai to develop a watch able to withstand the extreme conditions it will be subjected to. A Radiomir prototype is submitted to the Command of the First Submarine Group and the watch passed all the tests with flying colours.
  • 1938 - The birth of the first military divers' watch in history, the Panerai Radiomir: 47 millimetres in diameter, wire loop strap attachments, Rolex movement, screw-down winding crown, luminous dial. Its prototype was made in 1936.
  • 1940's - The wire loop strap attachments are replaced by horn-shaped lugs integral with the case. The luminosity is achieved by a dial constructed of superimposed layers: a metal base, a sheet filled with luminous material and a metal top sheet with the makers and numerals cut out of it. This system with the luminous material visible through the perforated areas ensures exceptional brightness and legibility in complete darkness. Water-resistance is ensured by a lever locking the winding crown fitted in a half-moon shaped bridge attached to the case.
  • 1943 - Development of the Mare Nostrum chronograph. This model designed for deck officers would remain at the prototype stage.
  • 1949 - The patent is granted for Luminor, the luminous substance based on tritium, which replaced the previous Radiomir mix developed between 1910 and 1915. The Radiomir and Luminor watches take their names from these two luminous substances.
  • 1956 - On the request of the Egyptian Navy, Panerai creates a large Radiomir watch with an Angelus movement with 8-day power reserve and 5-minute intervals to calculate immersion times and an oversized case, 60mm in diameter. For other Mediterranean Navies, Panerai makes limited production runs of approximately thirty pieces each. In the same year the patent is granted in Italy for the device protecting the winding crown, which clamps it in position and ensures the water-resistance of the watch. This device will be patented in the U.S.A. in 1960.
  • 1972 - On the death of Giuseppe Panerai, the running of the Florentine company is handed over to the engineer Dino Zei and the family firm becomes Officine Panerai s.r.l. The close collaboration with the Italian Navy continues in the supply of watches, instruments and sophisticated devices for its men.
  • 1980 - A watch is designed capable of withstanding a pressure equivalent to a depth of 1000 metres. The only prototype built has a titanium case, an automatic mechanical movement, a rubber strap and a luminous dial achieved by using tiny phials of tritium on the dial face and on the hands.
  • 1993 - Officine Panerai creates a numbered series in a limited edition of models for the first time available to the public: Luminor, Luminor Marina and an edition of the Mare Nostrum chronograph.
  • 1995 - A special edition of watches called Slytech is created. Sly is the nickname of actor Sylvester Stallone, a great admirer of the watch, who had requested a special edition called Submersible to use during the shooting of the movie Daylight. Subsequently, Stallone requested an edition with a white dial, named Daylight, and a personalized re-edition of the Mare Nostrum. All of these watches bear the actor's signature engraved on the back.
  • 1997 - The Vendôme Group, now RICHEMONT (at the time the Vendome Luxury Group), takes over Officine Panerai and the company's range of watches, compasses, torches and depth gauges. New productions are started up, with a significant improvement in quality, and the official watch of Italian Navy commandos takes on an international dimension following a worldwide launch.
  • 1998 - The first Panerai watches with automatic mechanical movements are presented to an international public: the Luminor Submersible professional diver's watch; the Luminor GMT with a second time zone indication and the Luminor Power Reserve with a function of high quality watchmaking which enables the power reserve to be read.
  • 1999 - At the International Salon of Haute Horologerie in Geneva, Panerai presents a new range of Contemporary watches based on important innovative features: a smaller case, 40 mm in diameter; a Panerai Luminor fitted with a metal bracelet; the use of the chronograph function and an exclusively designed Luminor chronograph case, in which the push-pieces are integrated into the device protecting the crown in total respect of the aesthetic of the historic watch; the use of a titanium-steel combination for the case parts and the links of the bracelet of the Panerai Luminor Chrono.
  • 2000 - Panerai creates the Luminor Submersible 1000 metres, a professional diver's instrument designed according to the NIHS (Normes de l'Industrie Horlogère Suisse) specifications relating to diver's watches and able to withstand a depth of 1000 metres. Equipped with a helium valve necessary for decompression, the sapphire crystal has a thickness of 5.1 mm and the steel back is 3 mm thick.
  • 2001 - The Panerai Boutique is inaugurated, following restyling, at the historical site in Piazza San Giovanni in Florence, following the purchase of the family boutique by Officine Panerai. This Bottega d'Arte represents a meeting point for enthusiasts and collectors of the brand who can find here, in addition to the current collection, special editions and production runs which Panerai reserves exclusively for its boutiques. The shop also plays host to the Panerai Historical Archive, a selection of historical items created by the Florentine company: watches, compasses, depth gauges, torches and horology instruments.
  • 2002 - The first Panerai boutique in Asia opens in the Prince's Building in Hong Kong. Officine Panerai opens the Manufacture in Neuchâtel, where all activities relating to the development and production of watches are based.
  • 2003 - The Panerai Boutique in Portofino is opened in the charming Piazzetta in this well-known Italian seaside resort. New ideas come to life...
  • 2004 - The Radiomir collection is enhanced by the 8 Days model. This is a return to the past, with the re-presentation in a modern key of a mechanism which Officine Panerai has already experimented with, the hand-wound 8-day movement. The calibre used in the 1940s was the Angelus, while the new model has a Jaeger-LeCoultre base. The case is 45 millimetres in diameter and is fitted with the patented slim wire loop strap attachments and a round caseband, while the screwed back and crown ensure water-resistance to 100 metres. The Luminor Submersible 2500M wins the Sports Watch of the Year prize at the 2004 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie at Geneva.
  • 2005 - Opening of Panerai Boutiques in Shanghai and Beverly Hills. Presentation of the first movement created entirely by Officine Panerai: the P.2002 with 8 days linear power reserve indication, GMT function and seconds reset.
  • 2006 - Panerai launches the Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT, the first Luminor to use the P.2002 calibre. The Manifattura Collection is born, a family of watches with the movements entirely created by Panerai which extol the standards of the brand: robustness, supreme technical quality and an aesthetic impact that is unique and unmistakable.
  • 2007 - The Manifattura Collection is enhanced with three new calibres: P.2003 10 Days GMT: the P.2004 8 Days GMT Chrono Monopulsante and the P.2005 6 Days GMT Tourbillion. Completely devised, designed and created by the Panerai Manufacture.
  • 2008 - The importance of the Manifattura Collection increases. Opening of new Boutiques in China, Japan, the United States and Europe.
  • 2009 - Launch of the new P.9000 calibres within the Manifattura Collection.

C.O.S.C

The C.O.S.C Certificate is a certificate of accuracy issued by the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (C.O.S.C) to a movement which is certified as a chronometer (that is, a particulary accurate watch) by exceeding the standards set by the NiHS (Normes de l'Industrue Hologere Suisse - Standards of the Swiss Watch Industry). To receive a chronometer certificate the movement undergoes 15 days of tests to measure the accuracy and consistency of its timekeeping in various positions and conditions of use and at different temperatures. Only movement recording an average daily rate variation between -4 and +6 seconds receive official certification from C.O.S.C.

Manifattura Collection : Panerai Tests and Certification Standards

In the course of their construction at the Panerai Manufacture, the Panerai Manifattura calibres - and the watches as a whole - are certified after undergoing several demanding final tests of its accuracy, consistent operation, ageing and water resistance. Consistent with what it has always done in the past, Panerai works on the continuous improvement of every part of its watches and it certifies that every single component meets the strictest standards of high-quality watchmaking.

The Panerai Manifattura movements and watches are subjected to the following tests:

  • Rate controls and CTMP test (Controle Technique des Montres Panerai)
  • Chronofiable test (NIHS 93-20 standard)
  • Acceleration test (NIHS 91-10 and NIHS 91-30 standards)
  • Ageing test of hand-setting mechanism and winding stem
  • Ageing test of winding-mechanism
  • Antimagnetic watch (ISO 764 standard)
  • Tests carried out on the case
  • Water-resistance test (ISO 2281 standard)
  • Winding crown resistance test to shocks.
  • Ageing test of push-pieces/correctors
  • Resistance test of the lever of the device protecting the crown

Information on Panerai's internal quality certification is included in the Certificates Booklet supplied with the Manifattura watches.
