The Rolex GMT-Master / The Rolex GMT-Master II

The Rolex GMT-Master comprises of variants of models. The GMT is named after "Greenwich Mean Time"; it was designed specially for pilots and people who travel to far off shores around the globe. Although its place has been taken over by its successor GMT-Master II, which features improved functionalities, the early models of GMT-Master are still sought after by watch collectors all over the world.

Like other Rolex specialty watches, this model has a fascinating story behind its inception.

In the early 1950s, Pan American Airlines went to Rolex on the behest of the Pilots to inquire whether Rolex could produce a special watch that could display the time in two different time zones at anyone time. The reason for this was because their pilots had to travel through multiple time zones. In response to Pan-Am's inquiry, Rolex came out with the first model 6542 of what was to be a long line GMT-Master watches in 1954. It had a special 24 hour hand and a bi-directional rotating bezel that were designed to give the time in any two time zones at the same time.

Since it worked exactly as requested, it soon was adopted by other airlines and aviators the world over but also found its place in the movies and on the wrist's of celebrities such as Honor Blackman form the James Bond Gold finger movie, the watch was a 6542 which became known as "the pussy galore" also Tom Selleck form the 1980's TV series "Magnum PI" wore a GMT Master with Pepsi bezel and Orlando Bloom has a large collection of vintage Rolex model including GMT's.

The Rolex GMT-Master II was launched in 1983. It was designed with the same basic functionality as the GMT-Master. It displays multiple time zones simultaneously. However, as opposed to the original, the GMT-Master II offers more versatility in terms of both looks and additional functionality.
