The Rolex Submariner came to life in the early 1950's when its then Director Rene P Jeanneret, who was a amateur diving enthusiast, encouraged Rolex to manufacture a sports style watch with a diving theme but also had to be elegant and be able to be worn as a gentlemen’s dress watch.
The Rolex Submariner, introduced in the early 50’s, laid down the foundations upon which most of their competitors would use as a universal bench mark for sports watches to come. From its rotating bezel, (used to gauge air-time when submersed), or to the flip lock clasp and extension link (to be used on a wetsuit) – all of these were Rolex innovations.
In early 1960, Rolex performed its most astonishing feat when the bathyscaphe Trieste emerged from 35,798 feet with a special Rolex Oyster attached to its outside still running perfectly. The watch had been exposed to a pressure of almost seven tons per square inch.
The Rolex Submariner has been known for its superior performance and supreme endurance at extreme temperatures and ocean depths. The Submariner forms part of Rolex’s Professional line. Introduced officially at the Basel Spring Watch Fair in 1954, it has gone from strength to strength in the watch market for over 50 years and is very much a force to be reckoned with.
Some of the earliest Submariner models were 6200 (renumbered as the 5510), 6204 (renumbered as the 6538), 6205 (renumbered as the 6536), 5512, 5513, 1680, and 5517. These models are no longer in production and have become highly sought after vintage collectibles the world over.
Apart form the various model references which, to the layman may not mean much, to those who love and collect these watches they will know whether the watches are vintage or modern, from what period of production, the type of dial and glass variant (plexi, mineral or sapphire glass) matt or gloss dial, superluminova, radium or tritium hour markers or a much coveted military issue Submariner like those made by Rolex on request of H.M. Royal Navy and Army (SBS and SAS) issued to their respective special forces units, or that of the legendary James Bond or the iconic Steve McQueen.
What ever model or variant of Submariner you have or wish to own you can be sure it has a long and proud history.
