Smash and grab London raids

800,000 worth of watches stolen within a week in smash and grab London raidsTwo high profile smash and grabs in central London have resulted in high value timepieces being stolen and a warning for the industry at large. The first robbery occurred on Thursday 31st January just after 5.30pm at the Watches of Switzerland store on Oxford Street in Central London, when an armed trio entered the store with firearms and threatened staff and customers before fleeing the scene, shocked customers tweeted from the scene and were visibly shaken after more than half a million pounds of timepieces were forcibly taken. Thankfully no one was injured, despite the watch display cabinets being smashed with hammers and looted, the trio then fled on foot toward Grosvenor Square. Smash and grab robberies are not unusual in London, but rarely occurring in such a pedestrian location as Oxford Street during rush hour which has raised eyebrows showing the lengths and risk that these thieves will take to steal these timepieces.Only days later, a further strike by masked burglars on motorbikes struck at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in the early hours of the 3rd February. A gang of four dressed in black and wearing helmets entered the lobby on high specification motorbikes and smashed display boxes with hammers, before speeding off with 300,000 worth of luxury timepieces. On this occasion, no one was injured and investigators do not believe these incidents are linked. At www.watches.co.uk we too were surprised at the high risk tactics used by the thieves, but with heavily marketed brands such as Rolex continuing to grow in popularity around the world, it makes sense that they would be so heavily targeted for theft. For a safe, secure and danger-free shopping experience please feel free to browse our selection of luxury pre-owned timepieces such as Rolex, Panerai, Tag Heuer and Omega on www.watches.co.uk from the comfort of your own home.
