Rolex Sea Dweller Octopus
When it comes to rare sought after diving watches, the Rolex COMEX Submariner, Military Subs and Sea Dwellers pretty much reign supreme above all others. A COMEX Sea-Dweller has long been at the top of our "Want" or “wish” lists, until hearing about this beast. The watch above is a modern-day Sea Dweller 16600. But not just any old Sea-Dweller, notice there isn't a COMEX insignia above 6 o'clock, how ever there is a small octopus insignia to the right of 9 o'clock. This is the insignia for the Italian State Police Diving unit, or rather the POLIZIA DI STATO, SOMMOZZATORI to be precise. These special edition Rolexes were realized in 2008 to mark the 50th anniversary (golden jubilee) of the Sommozzatori with only 78 examples being produced. Of the 78 produced 28 features the Military Brevet number on the case back while all 78 feature a special case back that has Polizia di sommozzatori and the date 1958 - 2008.With only 78 of these watches in existence, all of which were given to Italian State Police Divers, the speculated value of the Octopus Sea Dwellers is extraordinary. Rumor has it that one sold for around $26,000 on the Italian market. In May 2010 one was sold at auction at Christies Geneva for approximately £58000 and this wasn’t even one of the 28 individual models. It might not be a COMEX or Military sub but it defiantly falls in to this category making it a must have for any would be collector.
