Are Rolex Watches
A Good Investment
Piece?
Rolex is synonymous with luxury, style and adventure. While the brand is a global name, does it represent a sound investment for those looking to buy and sell Rolex watches?
An ageless classic, the brand was created by German watchmaker Hans Wilsdorf in the early twentieth century. It was soon recognised for its precision and innovation with the launch of the Oyster model in 1926 – the first waterproof and dustproof watch in the world.
Other milestones followed. Its self-winding mechanism – another world first - was patented in 1931, and the Rolex was soon the first choice of explorers, divers and long-distance swimmers, marking it out as a timepiece of adventure and durability.
Wrist appeal
Not just associated with sports, nowadays the appeal of the Rolex is broad and far-reaching. As well as celebrity endorsement, Rolex champions the worlds of film, architecture and the arts, ensuring that the brand reaches as wide an audience as possible.
The fact that Rolex watches are such a well-recognised and regarded brand proves that they hold their value and that their appeal is here to stay.
The top models
If you’re looking to invest in Rolex watches, be aware that some models are more likely to fetch higher prices at resale. The Submariner, Rolex GMT, Daytona and Day-Date are the models considered to be the safest investments thanks to their popularity.
Fame and fortune
Those associated with a famous name can produce some breathtaking results. The vintage Submariner worn by Sean Connery in the 1962 James Bond film Dr No sold at auction in New York earlier this year for over $1 million.
Paul Newman was known for his love of Rolex watches, and a rare Daytona model given to him by his wife Joanne Woodward sold for $17.8 million in 2017, setting a record for the most expensive watch in the world.
Rarity can also fetch high prices. In May 2018 a white gold Rolex Daytona, nicknamed “The Unicorn” for its uniqueness, fetched $5.9 million.
Many happy returns
But even investing in Rolex watches owned by the ordinary person can fetch a decent return at auctions up and down the country. Experts recommend seeking out rarer or limited edition models to make a good profit, or models that Rolex no longer makes – the 16800 Submariner being a good example of this.
If you can resist the temptation to wear any Rolex watch that you invest in, as well as keep all protective packaging intact and retain any accompanying documentation, this may boost its sale price.
A matter of time
Above all, to turn pre-owned Rolex watches into an investment, patience is required. Their luxe profile comes with a high price tag, so be prepared to let your investment mature for some years before resale.
For those with an eye for a classic wristwatch, perhaps with a unique story to tell, and the willingness to invest time as well as money, Rolex watches will repay you with years of stylish wear and a solid investment potential.
