Here's a guide to what you need to know when investing in a timepiece.

    Investing in a Rolex

A Time article looked into investing in watches, and it concluded that Rolex watches are the best investment option. To be an investment, the item has to hold its value, and Rolex was the best at this.

The growth of vintage watch collecting over the last few years has been incredible, the types of watches that people are investing in suggests that watches from $4,000 to $9,000 are good for holding their value and even appreciating in value over time, with the best brand to invest in being Rolex. Other smart investment choices are watches by Tudor and Patek Philippe. These watches tend to be more expensive, but are worth the expense in the long run.

Rolex's success is partly down to its image of success that it has built up over the decades. Adding this to the exquisite craftsmanship in each and every watch, from design through to creation, it is dominant in the second-hand watch marketplace. Some of the best models to consider are the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Daytona.

How to Choose a Vintage Watch

If you want to invest in a watch, you have to make your decision carefully. It may not be a huge return on investment, but you will want it to hold its value.

Vintage watches are a great option for an investment, and this usually means watches that are over 20 years old at least. Vintage watches go down in number each year, and this helps them to go up in value.

Alternatively, you could buy a pre-owned watch before it becomes vintage. That way, once it becomes vintage, it could go up in value, and this makes it much easier to break even.

Some of the factors that affect the price include the mechanics and materials of the watch, which should contain expensive materials like gold and platinum. Also look at the detail and the complications, as well as how long the watch took to build.
