The Swiss Watch Co UK Ltd presents this functional Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch for sale.
Originally developed for the ‘French Frogman’ unit in 1953 at the request of Captain Robert “Bob” Maloubier and Lieutenant Claude aspirant Riffaud. The CEO of Blancpain was happy to help, being an avid diver himself and thus they came up with the basic design of the watch. The Frogmen wanted “a watch with a black dial, large, bold numerals and clear markings, as well as an outer rotating bezel. We wanted to be able to align this bezel with the large minute hand, in order to easily know our remaining oxygen time. And we wanted all those markers to clearly glow in the dark”, and that is exactly what they got.
The Fifty Fathoms has barely changed in the subsequent 67 years and this version, the reference 5015-1130-52A is no different. Originally produced in 2007 and still available today, it is set in a 45mm solid stainless-steel case with a black ceramic uni-rotational bezel with luminous markers for legibility. The dial follows suit and has quarter Arabic numerals with arrowhead hour markers and large sword-shaped hands, as well as the date feature between 4/5 o’clock. Encased in sapphire crystal glass for water resistance up to 300M and powered by the in-house calibre 1315 automatic movement. It is fitted on a sail-canvas strap that has a rubber backing for longevity and comes with a steel deployment buckle.
Originally purchased in circa 2011 and note there are marks to the caseback, which could not be removed due to the engraving. The watch comes with its original outer and inner ‘Tool-kit’ box with its instruction booklet, swing tag, leather service booklet and international warranty card (undated).
