Breitling Vintage Chrono Matic Bullhead ‘Pult’ timepiece
Here at www.watches.co.uk we love to show our customers unusual and hard to find timepieces, that you might not see every day. This special watch is the Breitling Vintage Chrono Matic Bullhead, sometimes known as the ‘Mickey’ or the ‘Pult’ mainly due to the unusual chronograph pushers being located on the top of the case, and not on the case sides like most wrist watches, making it resemble the look of a bull with horns.
Eccentric and intriguing designed with drivers in mind, the Chrono matic case is thicker at the top than the bottom, allowing the wearer to check the time more easily, and interestingly the watch straps have to be removed before the caseback can be unscrewed. The watch comes with the Breitling calibre 12 automatic movement with microrotor.
In terms of history, this is a classic example of when Breitling was a smaller family owned company and not the huge marketing led global business of today.
Back in the mid-late 1960’s the race was on between rivals Breitling (who teamed up on this project with Heuer) and Zenith, to be the first brand to bring an automatic chronograph to the market, with Zenith as Breitling’s main competitor in this field. Zenith admittedly did design their Zenith El Primero from scratch, while Breitling and Heuer sub-contracted the manufacture to an established wrist watch manufacturing company of that time called Dupois-Depraz who created a complicated chronograph movement that was fitted into a Buren 1281.
We particularly love the use of colour on the dial, if you look closely you can see at least five different shades of dark brown, taupe, silver and orange. We have one of these in stock at the moment, this particular style is a slightly later 1971 model 2117 and is in stunning condition considering its age!
