Apollo 8 marked the second crewed spaceflight mission under the United States Apollo space program. It achieved the remarkable feat of being the inaugural crewed spacecraft to venture beyond low Earth orbit, journey to the Moon, conduct lunar orbit, and safely return. Notably, the astronauts aboard Apollo 8, launched on December 21, 1968, were the pioneering individuals to witness the far side of the Moon. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of this historic milestone in 2018, Omega crafted a new timepiece: The Omega Speedmaster Apollo 8 Dark Side of the Moon (311.92.44.30.01.001).

Coming set in a 44.25mm black ceramic case fitted with a fixed black ceramic tachymetre bezel, featuring a yellow accent. The dial is where this model stands apart from other Speedmasters, it is black and partially skeletonised with laser-ablated moon relief on the blackened main plate and bridges, as well as triple sub-dials with matching yellow accents and luminous hour indexes and hands. The details are protected by a domed sapphire crystal glass and powered by the manually wound calibre 1861 chronograph mechanism (unique to this model), visible through an exhibition caseback. There is also an engraving on the caseback from the Apollo 8 crew which reads “we’ll see you on the other side”. It comes on a black Omega perforated leather strap with yellow stitching and secured by a black ceramic buckle.

Originally sold in June 2019 and in unworn condition with caseback sticker intact, supplied with its original inner and outer boxes, instruction booklet, black card holder, pictogram card and international warranty card.
