We are proud to present the iconic Omega Vintage Speedmaster ‘Moonwatch’ for sale.
Since its introduction in 1957, the Omega Speedmaster Chronograph has been characterized by its precision timing and clean, legible dial. Chronographs were originally built and advertised as tools for engineers, technicians, doctors and athletes – a way of keeping seconds, much like a stopwatch – which made them less appealing as men’s casual wear. However, these qualities made the Speedmaster the perfect watch for marking some of America’s greatest achievements – including the first successful trip to the Moon.
July 21st, 1969 marked one the most famous days in American history as Apollo 11 safely landed on the moon. A mere six hours after landing, commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin took the very first human steps on the Moon’s lunar surface while wearing a NASA issued Speedmaster.
From that point onwards the Speedmaster earned the nickname the “Moonwatch” after Apollo 11 and during the following six lunar landings by American astronauts. It gained worldwide recognition and was even worn during the Apollo and Soyuz docking by both American and Soviet Union astronauts. In fact, the Omega Speedmaster Chronograph has been the only piece of equipment used in all of NASA’s space exploration from Gemini to the International Space Station program.
This version the ST145.022 was produced from 1968 until 1997 making it the longest running version of the Speedmaster and is a testament to the quality and longevity of the watch. It comes in a 42mm stainless steel case with the classic ‘twisted’ lugs and has its original fixed black tachymetre bezel. The dial features the printed Omega logo and is a clean black finish with contrasting white minute/split second markers and creamy aged luminous baton hour markers. White sword hands with sub-dials at 3/6/9 complete the dial, which is protected by an acrylic plexi-glass. Powered by the iconic Omega calibre 861 manual chronograph mechanism, which is protected by a solid caseback featuring the engraved Hippocampus logo and fitted on a matching steel bracelet with an Omega folding clasp.
Originally made in late 1969 and fine condition for its age, this Speedmaster is sold with a 12-month warranty and would be a great piece for any Omega enthusiast.
