July 21st, 1969 marked one of the most famous days in American history as Apollo 11 safely landed on the Moon. A mere six hours after landing, commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin took the very first human steps on the lunar surface while wearing NASA-issued Speedmasters.

From that point onwards the Speedmaster earned the nickname the “Moonwatch” after Apollo 11 and during the following six lunar landings by American astronauts. It gained worldwide recognition and was even worn during the Apollo-Soyuz docking mission by both American and Soviet astronauts. In fact, the Omega Speedmaster Chronograph has been the only watch qualified for all of NASA’s manned spaceflight missions from Gemini through to the International Space Station programme.

This example is a desirable straight writing Speedmaster from 1969 and remains in fine condition considering its age. The reference ST145.022 was produced from 1968 until 1997, making it the longest-running version of the Speedmaster and a testament to the quality and longevity of the model. It features a 42mm stainless steel case with the signature twisted lugs and retains its original fixed black tachymetre bezel. The dial is fitted with the printed Omega logo and features a clean black finish with contrasting white minute and chronograph seconds tracks alongside beautifully aged luminous baton hour markers. White baton hands and the classic tri-compax chronograph layout with subsidiary registers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock complete the dial, which is protected by an acrylic hesalite crystal.

At its heart is the legendary Omega calibre 861 manual-winding chronograph movement, protected by a solid stainless steel caseback engraved with The First Watch Worn On The Moon, this is stamped in straight lines across the case back, so this model is known as 'straight writing Speedy'

Originally manufactured in 1969 and in fine condition for its age, this Speedmaster is accompanied by its Omega presentation box, which, unfortunately, has a broken hinge.
