In 1935 the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai and other watch manufacturers with the request of designing a watch resistant to extreme conditions while at the same time keeping exact time for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command and offering excellent legibility even under water. The ‘black seal’ moniker comes from the names they gave to the slow torpedoes used on the submarines. The prototype submitted by Panerai in 1936 was called Radiomir, from the name of the luminescent substance used for hands and indices and passed all the tests successfully.

This version the Radiomir PAM00287 is part of a limited series of only 1500 watches. It is set in a 45mm polished 316L steel cushion-shaped case with a more traditional shaped crown, based on the early models before Panerai’s patented crown-lock system was invented in 1955, it also features a smooth polished bezel. The dial is a clean black colour with cut-out luminous hour markers and 12/6 Arabic numerals, running seconds hand at 9 o'clock, steel edged hands, date window at 3 o’clock and is protected by a domed sapphire crystal glass. It is powered by the Panerai calibre OPIII automatic mechanism with a solid caseback. It comes fitted on a brown calf leather strap with beige stitching and a steel pin buckle.

Originally purchased in June 2008 and in mint condition, this Radiomir comes with its original inner & outer boxes, instruction booklet, barcode stickers, swing tag, chronometer certificate and international warranty. This watch comes with a 12-month warranty from SWC.
