In 1935, the Royal Italian Navy enlisted Panerai and other distinguished watchmakers to create a timepiece that could withstand the harshest conditions, ensuring precise timekeeping for the elite frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command. The challenge was to craft a watch capable of maintaining accuracy under extreme circumstances, all while providing exceptional legibility even in the depths of the ocean. The origin of the 'black seal' nomenclature traces back to the designations given to the slow torpedoes deployed on the submarines. In response, Panerai unveiled the prototype in 1936, aptly named the Radiomir after the luminescent substance illuminating its hands and indices. This remarkable timepiece not only met but exceeded all expectations during rigorous testing, solidifying its place in history as a triumph of precision engineering and functionality.

This iteration of the Radiomir Black seal, reference PAM00609, comes set in a 45mm polished stainless steel cushion-shaped case with a smooth polished bezel. The watch is fitted with the more traditional shaped screwdown crown based on the early models before Panerai’s patented crown-lock system was invented in 1955, and this ensures a water resistance of 10atm (100m/330ft). The black sandwich dial features cut-out luminous hour indexes and quarter Arabic numerals, as well as a running seconds dial at 9 o’clock, steel edged luminous hands and is protected by a domed sapphire crystal glass. It is powered by the manually wound calibre P.5000 which can be viewed through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback. Lastly, the watch is completed by a brown leather strap which is secured by a polished trapezoidal pin buckle clasp.

Originally produced September 2021 and in mint condition, this Radiomir comes supplied with our inner and outer boxes, instruction booklet, retail barcodes and original international warranty card. 

This Panerai benefits from the coverage of its extended warranty until September 2029.
