In 1935 the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai and other watch manufacturers with the request of designing a watch resistant to extreme conditions while at the same time keeping exact time for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command and offering excellent legibility even under water. The prototype submitted by Panerai in 1936 was called Radiomir, from the name of the luminescent substance used for hands and indices and passed all the tests successfully.

This Panerai Radiomir ref. PAM00574 is set in a smaller than usual 42mm polished 316L steel cushion-shaped case with a polished bezel and a more traditional shaped crown based on the early models before Panerai’s patented crown-lock system was first invented in 1955. The dial is a clean black colour with the cut-out 12/6/3 Arabic numerals and hour markers, a running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and is protected by a domed sapphire crystal glass. It is powered by the Panerai calibre P.1000 in-house manual wind mechanism, which is visible through an exhibition caseback. It comes fitted on a green alligator leather strap with matching green stitching and a steel pin buckle.

Originally purchased in August 2021 and in a mint condition, this Radiomir comes with its original inner & outer boxes, instruction booklet and international warranty card. This Radiomir is covered under Panerai's extended warranty until August 2029.
