In 1935 the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai and other watch manufacturers with the request of designing a watch resistant to extreme conditions while at the same time keeping exact time for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command and offering excellent legibility even under water. The prototype submitted by Panerai in 1936 was called Radiomir, from the name of the luminescent substance used for hands and indices and passed all the tests successfully.

This version the Radiomir PAM00946 is part of a limited series of only 388 watches. It is set in a 45mm polished 316L steel cushion-shaped case with a more traditional shaped crown, based on the early models before Panerai’s patented crown-lock system was invented in 1955, it also features a smooth polished bezel. The dial is a stunning blue/black sunburst colour with cut-out luminous hour markers and 12/9/6 Arabic numerals, steel edged hands and protected by a domed sapphire crystal glass. It also features a date window at 3 o’clock, 72-hour power reserve indicator at 5 o’clock and a GMT second timezone hand at 9 o’clock. It is powered by the Panerai calibre P.4002 in-house automatic mechanism with a ‘3-day’ power reserve and is visible through a wave-pattern exhibition caseback. It comes fitted on a dark blue alligator leather strap with beige stitching and a steel pin buckle (blue rubber strap also included).

Originally purchased in June 2019 and in mint condition, this Radiomir comes with its original inner & outer boxes, instruction booklet, barcode stickers, original sales receipt and international warranty. It is currently under Panerai manufacturers and has been extended by 6 years until June 2027.
