Born out of the early 1930’s sports watches worn by Sir Malcom Campbell, Rolex has long been associated with motor racing and speed. In 1963 Rolex removed the telemeter scale and moved the tachymeter onto the bezel for increased dial legibility and introduced the world to the term ‘Cosmograph’. But it was not until 1965 that the term ‘Daytona’ was used on the model, which came about as Rolex was the official timepiece of the racetrack.

The Cosmograph Daytona has, thanks to its legendary status as the ultimate racing tool watch often appeared in luxurious solid gold cases ever since the reference 6263 in 1969. The solid gold versions were produced in far more limited numbers than their steel counterparts and thus have become very collectable in the years since.

This version of the famed Daytona, reference 116518 comes set in a 40mm 18ct yellow gold Oyster case with a matching polished 18ct units-per-hour bezel. The crisp white dial features applied Arab numeral hour indexes with luminous 3/6/9 indices and matching hands, with the dial completed by triple chronograph sub-dials in contrasting champagne as well as the iconic red ‘DAYTONA’ text above the bottom sub-dial. The watch is protected by a flat sapphire crystal glass and fitted with screw-down pushers and Triplock crown, allowing for a water resistance of 10atm (100m/330ft). This Daytona is powered by the automatic calibre 4130 chronograph movement and comes fitted on a light brown alligator strap with an 18ct yellow gold deployment clasp.

Originally purchased in February 2003 and in mint condition for its age with Rolex hologram in place on the caseback. Coming supplied with its original inner & outer boxes, instruction booklet, seal, swing tag, leather card holder, Rolex handkerchief and international warranty card.
