Rolex’s association with speed and motorsport stretches back to the early 20th century, long before the Daytona name appeared on a dial. In 1963, Rolex redefined the chronograph by relocating the tachymeter scale from the dial to the bezel, improving legibility and giving birth to the “Cosmograph.” Two years later, the name “Daytona” was added in recognition of Rolex’s growing involvement with the legendary Florida racetrack, cementing the model’s racing pedigree.

The reference 16520 marked a defining moment in Daytona history. Introduced in 1988, it was the first automatic Daytona and remained in production until 2000. The model features a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, larger than its manually wound predecessors, and is fitted with a fixed steel tachymeter bezel engraved with units per hour.

This example features the highly desirable white dial with black-framed chronograph sub-dials, a key trait that distinguishes the Zenith-era Daytonas from later in-house models. The luminous hands and hour markers are edged in white gold to prevent tarnishing, while the dial layout remains perfectly balanced and instantly recognisable. Powering the watch is the legendary Rolex calibre 4030, a heavily modified version of the Zenith El Primero movement, reduced in beat rate and refined by Rolex for durability and chronometer performance, earning this reference its enduring “Zenith” nickname.

The case is fitted with screw-down chronograph pushers and a Triplock winding crown, ensuring a water resistance of 100 metres (10 atm). Completing the watch is the classic stainless steel Oyster bracelet with a folding safety clasp.

Originally purchased in September 1994, this Daytona is presented in fine, rare unpolished condition and retains sharp case lines and honest wear consistent with careful ownership. It is supplied with its inner and outer Rolex boxes, original punched paper warranty, booklet, swing tag, as well as a Rolex service card dated January 2026 and accompanying service receipt, confirming recent official attention from Rolex.
