Emerging from the sporting timepieces of the early 1930s donned by Sir Malcolm Campbell, Rolex has forged a lasting connection with motor racing and speed. In the mid-1950s, Rolex introduced a watch featuring a telemeter and tachymeter scale on the dial, accompanied by three sub-dials for precise timing up to 12 hours. By 1963, the telemeter scale was removed, and the tachymeter found its place on the bezel, enhancing dial legibility and introducing the term 'Cosmograph' to the world. However, it wasn't until 1965 that the term 'Daytona' was officially associated with the model, a nod to Rolex's role as the official timekeeper of the racetrack. Subsequent models from this lineage have evolved into some of the most coveted, collectible, and valuable watches ever created. Their allure extends beyond the famed 'exotic' Paul Newman dials and the introduction of El Primero movements in the 1990s, drawing from the rich racing heritage of the collection and the exceptional quality of the watches themselves.

This version of the Daytona, reference 16523 was first produced in 1988, with the 165xx series running until being discontinued in 2001, coming set in a larger 40mm stainless steel Oyster case compared to its 37mm predecessors. It features a fixed 18ct yellow gold units per hour bezel and a clean black dial with diamond set hour markers, gold 15/30/45 numerals and gold/black hands. The chronograph sub-dials are black but edged in gold, with the watch powered by the modified Zenith El Primero movement known as the calibre 4030. Ensuring its 10atm (100m/330ft) water resistance is 18ct yellow gold screw-down pushers and Triplock crown, with the watch completed by a matching Rolesor (Stainless steel & 18ct yellow gold) Oyster link bracelet with a folding safety catch clasp.

Originally purchased in March 1998 and in fine condition with service stickers intact, coming supplied with its original inner wooden box (c-clip broken), instruction booklet, swing tag, seal, calendar card, Rolex handkerchief, leather card holder, Rolex service card (March 2021) and perforated international warranty.
