Produced for just over 25 years and with fewer than 25,000 examples ever made, the Oysterquartz stands as one of the most distinctive and unconventional chapters in Rolex history. Born out of the quartz revolution of the 1970s, Rolex initially collaborated with other leading Swiss manufactures on the Beta 21 movement before committing to developing its own in-house quartz calibre. By 1978, Rolex had perfected the design, with all subsequent Oysterquartz models achieving COSC chronometer certification, a rare distinction for quartz watches of the era.

This example, reference 17000, is crafted entirely in stainless steel and housed in a sharply defined 36mm Oyster case with the characteristic angular lines and integrated bracelet, a design hallmark of the period. The watch features a clean white dial with applied silver Roman numeral hour markers and matching hands, offering excellent legibility and a distinctly elegant aesthetic.

The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal, making the Oysterquartz one of the earliest Rolex models to feature sapphire as standard. The integrated stainless steel bracelet is fitted with a folding clasp, complete with embossed Rolex crown.

Originally purchased in September 1994, this Oysterquartz remains in mint condition. Importantly, the watch was serviced by Rolex in March 2021 and is now supplied with a Rolex service card, offering valuable reassurance. It also comes with its original outer box (insert is missing), copy of the original sales receipt, Rolex Datejust booklets, instruction booklet, and original warranty papers.
