First launched in 1953, the Explorer quickly distinguished itself through absolute clarity, durability, and purpose-driven design. Its stark black dial, oversized hour markers, and signature 3–6–9 Arabic numerals defined what a true tool watch should be: robust, legible, and reliable in the most demanding environments. From Himalayan peaks to polar expeditions, the Explorer became a trusted companion to some of history’s greatest adventurers a symbol of endurance and precision.

This example, reference 1016, represents one of the most celebrated and longest-running versions of the model. Introduced in 1960 and produced for nearly three decades, the 1016 is admired by collectors for its purity, proportion, and unmistakable vintage charm. This particular piece, originally purchased in May 1963, is set within the classic 36mm Oystersteel case and features the desirable black matte rolex service dial with quarter Arabic numerals. It is powered by the legendary Rolex Calibre 1570 chronometer-certified automatic movement – a workhorse calibre renowned for reliability and longevity. A screw-down caseback and Oyster crown ensure water resistance to 10atm (100m/330ft), while a traditional plexiglass crystal preserves its authentic vintage character. The watch is completed by the matching brushed stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding clasp.
