The Rolex Submariner, first introduced in 1953, is a legendary timepiece with a rich history deeply intertwined with the world of diving. Originally designed as a professional diver's watch, and soon becoming the first watch to achieve a water resistance of 30atm (300m/1000ft), the Submariner quickly gained iconic status for its exceptional durability, precision, and distinctive aesthetic. Over the years, it has evolved while maintaining its core attributes, becoming a symbol of both underwater exploration and timeless elegance. With its robust construction and technological innovations, the Rolex Submariner continues to be a sought-after classic, embodying a legacy of horological excellence and adventure. The ref. 1680 iteration was the very first date-displaying Rolex Submariner model, which makes it an especially important reference in the history of the brand’s famous dive watch. Like many vintage Rolex watches, the Submariner Date ref. 1680 came in several iterations and the so-called “Red Sub” models are some of the most collectible of them all.
This version of the 1680 comes set in the classic 40mm stainless steel Oyster case with a bi-rotational bezel with black aluminium insert with contrasting silver dive graduations. The matte black 'MKII' dial features the iconic red ‘Submariner’ text, 'Meters first' lettering, open 6's, elongated 'F' in 'ft', as well as Tritium luminous hour markers and matching hand set (indicated by the Swiss-T<25). The dial is completed by a date aperture at 3 o'clock and protected by an acrylic plexi-glass (called a top-hat because of its raised profile), as well as being powered by the automatic calibre 1575 chronometer movement. Lastly, this Submariner is completed by a '9315' folded bracelet, '280' shoulder pieces and safety catch clasp (stamped 4 / 69) with the incredibly rare misspelt 'Pateted' dive extension.
Originally from November 1970 and in fine condition for its age, this Submariner comes with a Rolex inner & outer box, translation paper, 1970 calendar card, swing tag, anchor, Submariner 200 card, Oyster booklet, Submariner booklet, document wallet, 2004 service documentation and original perforated international warranty certificate.
