We are proud to present this highly collectible Rolex Submariner 5512 “Two-Line”, offered in fine condition for its age and carefully checked in our workshop.
Introduced in 1959, the reference 5512 is widely regarded as the blueprint for the modern Submariner. It was the first Submariner to adopt the now-iconic 40mm case, as well as crown guards, marking a decisive shift toward the proportions and functionality that define the model today. Produced until 1979, the 5512 evolved through several important iterations, making early examples particularly significant to collectors.
This watch features the highly desirable gilt dial, an early dial type produced for a comparatively short period before Rolex transitioned to matte dials in 1966. Gilt dials are immediately recognisable by their glossy black surface and gold foil-like printing, which appears to float beneath the lacquer. These dials are widely admired for their depth, warmth, and visual richness, and are notably rarer than later matte versions, typically commanding a premium as a result.
This example displays a correct two-line gilt dial, indicating its non-chronometer specification, with beautifully preserved gilt text and plots. The watch is housed in the classic 40mm stainless steel Oyster case with pin-hole lugs, fitted with the correct bi-directional black bezel (pre-ratcheting era), which has developed an attractive, evenly faded insert with light, honest marks consistent with age.
The tritium hour markers and hands show pleasing, even ageing, and the dial is protected by a domed acrylic plexiglass. Water resistance is ensured by a screw-down crown guarded by the characteristic pointed crown guards, a feature seen only on early examples and highly prized by enthusiasts.
Powering the watch is the Rolex calibre 1530, a robust automatic movement produced during the early years of the 5512. The watch is completed by a stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding clasp, maintaining the tool-watch integrity of this reference.
Originally purchased in November 1963, this Submariner is supplied with a green Rolex travel pouch, transparent plastic card sleeve, and the original folded Rolex warranty paper. Overall, the watch remains in fine condition for its age, retaining strong originality and excellent vintage character.
An early gilt-dial 5512 is considered a cornerstone reference for serious Submariner collectors, rare, historically important, and visually captivating.
