First launched in 1953, the Rolex Submariner is widely regarded as the world’s most iconic dive watch. Although originally created as a professional tool for underwater exploration, the Submariner quickly transcended its utilitarian roots and became one of the most recognisable and influential wristwatches ever made. The earliest references are especially prized, capturing a period when Rolex was still refining the formula that would go on to define the modern dive watch.
The reference 6536-1 is one of those important early Submariners. Produced only for a short period during the late 1950s, it belongs to the coveted family of pre-crown guard models and is instantly recognisable by its smaller 6mm crown, slimmer case proportions, and beautifully minimalist vintage profile. Unlike later Submariners, the 6536-1 retained the earlier 100m / 330ft depth rating, marking it out as one of the last references before Rolex increased the Submariner’s water resistance on subsequent models.
This particular example features a highly desirable gilt dial, with the black surface having aged into a rich warm tone that gives the watch exceptional character and depth. The gilt printing and chapter detailing remain wonderfully evocative of the era, while the luminous hour plots and matching handset have aged consistently, reinforcing the strong vintage appeal. The watch is fitted with a faded bezel insert, complete with individual minute markings for the first fifteen minutes, a classic feature of these early Submariners that underscores their original diving purpose.
The stainless steel Oyster case retains the elegant proportions that distinguish the early no-crown-guard references, while the domed acrylic crystal further enhances the unmistakable vintage aesthetic. Powered by a period Rolex automatic movement, this watch represents an important chapter in Submariner history — one that predates the larger crown guard cases and later high-depth references.
Made by Rolex in 1957, serial number 30***5, this Submariner 6536-1 is supplied only with an old Rolex box and is sold with our 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.
