Rolex Sea Dweller Watches
The Sea Dweller is an ultra-resistant divers' watch that was originally introduced in 1967 and waterproof to 2000ft. This was upgraded to 4000ft (1,2200m) in 1978. One of the key features of Sea Dwellers is the helium escape valve; technology pioneered by Rolex and designed for protection during saturation diving, allowing helium to exit the watch during decompression. Taking the ability to withstand extremes even further, in 2008 Rolex introduced the Sea Dweller Deepsea model, which is resistant to 3,900m. If you are looking for a divers watch capable of surviving the deepest of expeditions, look no further.
The dial of the Rolex Sea Dweller features the model name in red, a homage to the very first model. Rolex engineers also crafted a gas escape valve fitted with a spring into the watch so that when pressure between the inside and outside of the watch reachers 3 to 5 bars, the helium is allowed to escape. This protects the watch as the pressure would normally force the crystal out of the watch case, leaving it broken.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Sea-Dweller was designed for professional deep-sea divers. It is famous for its extreme water resistance and the inclusion of the helium escape valve, which allows the watch to withstand saturation diving.
Depending on the reference, the Sea-Dweller is water resistant to depths of 1,220 metres (4,000 feet) or 3,900 metres (12,800 feet) in the case of the Deepsea. This makes it one of the most capable dive watches in the Rolex collection.
Some of the rarest Sea-Dweller models include early “Double Red Sea-Dweller” references, as well as special editions and transitional models produced in limited numbers. These are highly sought after by collectors and can command significant premiums on the pre-owned market.
The Sea-Dweller and Submariner are designed for different purposes. The Submariner is a versatile dive watch suitable for everyday use, scuba, and recreational diving. The Sea-Dweller is built for professional divers who need much greater depth resistance. Which is better depends on your needs, but both are iconic Rolex models.
