We are proud to present this iconic and very rare Rolex 'Panna' Rail Dial Explorer II, reference 16550, for sale – a superb example of one of the most significant transitional Explorer II models, fully checked in our workshop. 

Designed for explorers, mountaineers and scientific teams working in extreme environments, the Explorer II has long been a tool watch built for absolute clarity and reliability. Its fixed 24-hour bezel, prominent luminous markers, and dedicated 24-hour hand were engineered to help wearers distinguish day from night or track a second time zone in places where natural light is absent or unpredictable.

This reference 16550, produced from 1985 to 1989, marked a major evolution in the Explorer II lineage. It introduced the upgraded 40mm Oystersteel case, the new calibre 3085 GMT movement, a redesigned dial layout, and a sapphire crystal – bridging the gap between vintage charm and modern Rolex engineering.

This example from 1988 features the clean rare cream/ivory dial, often referred to as the Panna dial, Panna is Italian for cream, with applied hour markers, matching reflective polished hands, and the distinctive red 24-hour GMT hand. The fixed 24-hour engraved bezel provides excellent legibility and functionality, while the tough Oyster case ensures enduring durability. Powered by the automatic chronometer-certified calibre 3085, the watch offers independent hour-hand setting, allowing effortless second-time-zone tracking.

The watch is fitted with its stainless steel Oyster bracelet with folding clasp, completing the classic Explorer II look and wearability.

Originally purchased in July 1988, this Explorer II is offered in mint condition for its age and comes as a complete full set including its original Rolex inner and outer boxes, perforated international guarantee paperwork, booklets, swing tag, Rolex service card dated January 2018 and green leather card holder.
