The now infamous El Primero was launched in 1969 and its name ‘the first’, was a big statement within the watch industry as both automatic and chronograph watches both existed, just never together before then. Zenith’s choice of name, El Primero, drove the point home. But the moniker was suitable given its pioneering approach. It allowed the balance to oscillate at 36,000 beats per hour, a rate which in turn allowed the measurement of elapsed time to a then unheard of 1/10th of a second with central rotor, column wheel and the other now standard elements of an automatic movement having undergone a remarkable feat of miniaturization. It was such a leap that his very movement is what would be found inside legends the likes of Rolex’s Daytona for the next 30 years.

This version of the infamous 'El Primero' reference 97.9001.9004/81.R946 is part of the new El Primero 21 range, and comes set in a 44mm matte titanium DEFY case. It features a skeletonised dial which exposes the striking blue colour of the bridges and oscillating rotor of the  Calibre El Primero 21 movement which is chronograph capable of timing to 1/100th of a second. The sub dials are a graphite grey and match the case, chronograph pushers and strap sides perfectly. Fitted on a striking blue strap with matching titanium deployment clasp.

Originally sold in December 2021 and in mint condition, supplied with its original inner and outer box, instruction guide, original receipts and international warranty card.
